Galería Lamanai on the beach in Akumal represents artists working in Mayan-influenced and contemporary traditions. Choose from Oaxacan embroidered tapestries colored with natural plant dyes, beautiful pottery in the Mesoamerican tradition from the village of Mata Ortíz or alebrijes, brightly painted folk art sculptures of mythical or real creatures made of papier mâché and wood. The indigenous Crafts Marketplace in the village of Puerto Morelos is well worth a visit. Along with blankets, hammocks, traditional clothing, and traditional wood carvings, baskets and Mayan stone carvings, you’ll also find sterling silver jewelry. The marketplace is one block south of the town square on Rafael Melgar Avenue.
